The Arid Lands Environment Centre
Is Central Australia's leading environmental organisation.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Arid Area Land Management: ALEC has continued its ongoing dialogue with pastoralists, indigenous organisations and Government in developing management plans for central Australian bio-regions including areas of high conservation management.
Waste Reduction: ALEC is a prime mover in developing mechanisms to reduce landfill in the Alice region, including a tip shop, and green waste recycling.
Arid Area Water Management and Conservation: ALEC has worked with the Power and Water Authority to produce a framework for a comprehensive water management strategy for Alice Springs which will have extensive community involvement and which it is hoped will become a model for other arid zone communities.
Engangered Species: ALEC has collaborated with the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory to produce a database on rare and threatened plants of Central Australia.
