Conservation Council of South Australia
Is the major peak environment group in South Australia with a membership of 60 diverse groups.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Nuclear Issues/Uranium: CCSA is actively opposing uranium mining, including at Roxby and Australia's two newest uranium mines - Beverley and Honeymoon, and the proposal to create a National Nuclear Waste Dump in SA's outback.
Land Conservation: CCSA is pushing for a new Biodiversity Act in SA. SA is the world's "extinction state", and has over 1500 threatened plants and animals, that need stronger legal protection from over development, grazing, mining, fishing, etc. CCSA is also pushing hard for the state's Native Vegetation Act to be reviewed and overhauled, as tree clearance is still happening apace in South Australia.
Water: CCSA is campaigning for seven new marine Wilderness areas to be proclaimed in SA waters, and for the new Great Australian Bight Marine Park to include sanctuary zones to protect the Southern Right Whales, which fully exclude mining and fishing. CCSA is pushing for proper protection of SA's internationally recognised Ramsar listed wetlands - Coongie Lakes and the Coorong. These priceless wetlands are facing severe impacts from mining, grazing, loss of environmental flows, and over-development.
Mining: CCSA is campaigning to stop the state's premier mallee wilderness conservation park - Yumbarra - in the state's far west, from being opened up for mining. Not only will this decimate the fragile wilderness values of the Park, it will be a dangerous precedent for all remaining fully protected parks in SA. Less than 5% of SA is protected from mining at present.
