Conservation Council of the South-East Region and Canberra (CCSERAC)
The Conservation Council of South-East Region and Canberra - is the peak non government, environment organisation in the ACT and represents the interests of over 35 community and conservation organisations in the ACT and the south east region of NSW.
.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Woodland and grassland conservation
: Whilst over 50% of the ACT in protected in Namadgi National Park and the Canberra Nature Park, very few low land areas are included in the reserve system. This is largely historical and relates to the decision to build Canberra in the valleys, leaving the hills and ridges free from development. Today the Conservation Council is battling to protect the last remaning areas of grassland and grassy woodland from urban encroachment.
Sustainable transport: Canberrans travel further in a year than anyone else anywhere in Australia, and almost all of it happens by car! Greenhouse emissions from the transport sector account for 22% of total emissions and are the only ones that continue to rise. The Conservation Council has prepared a blueprint for a sustainable transport future: Canberra at the Crossroads - a way out of the transport mess and is campaigning for its acceptance by Government. The first stage in this campaign is to increase the effectiveness of ACTION Buses, to the point that it is considered a viable transport alternative.
Sustainable urban planning: Canberra is known around the world as a great planned city. That City is now having to grapple with rapid growth whilst at the same time retaining its very unique character and the charm that makes it remembered as the 'Bush Capital'. The Conservation Council is campaiging for a halt to urban spawl which threatens some of the last remaining woodlands and grasslands areas, whilst at the same time campaigning for urban consolidation to occur in a way that is environmentally friendly and sensitive to the cutural heritage of the ACT's inner city areas.
Other issues: We also work on integrated catchment management, sustainable water use, pollution and waste management, national park and reserve managment and greenhouse gas emissions reduction
