Environment Victoria
Environment Victoria is Victoria's main state based peak environment group.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Forests: We focus on the forests of the Central Highlands, just east of Melbourne. Our message is that we do not need to log native forests - timber needs can easily be met by Australia's extensive plantations. Environment Victoria encourages consumers to buy "forest friendly" products made from recycled or plantation timber to support our call to shift out of native forests.
Land Conservation: Land clearance in Victoria is continuing at the rate of 1,500 to 2,000 hectares every year. Clearance of native vegetation has devastating impacts - soil erosion, salinity and loss of plant, animal and bird species. Environment Victoria is campaigning to halt land clearance and to rehabilitate degraded, cleared land.
Water: We aim to ensure that sufficient water flows are allowed in all of Victoria's rivers to ensure a healthy ecology. Two key issues are The Snowy River, which only receives 1% of its original flow and is becoming a "dead" river, choked with weeds and introduced fish and The Mitchell River, Victoria's last wild river which is facing the threat of a dam.
Transport: Smogbusters is our community project to clear Melbourne's smog by encouraging increased use of public transport and other non-polluting travel and reduced reliance on cars. In addition, we are lobbying to ensure that Melbournians have access to an efficient, well connected public transport system.
Energy and Greenhouse: We promote energy efficient practices and products to the community, showing residents that they can save energy, water, money and the environment by making a few simple changes at home. This in turn reduces the 20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions produced as a result of domestic activity.
Waste, Toxics and Urban Issues: Community outreach activities to generate and maintain a broad interest and enthusiasm for waste minimisation in both urban and rural areas.
