Friends of the Earth Australia
Is a national Australian organisation and part of the global FOE network with member groups in 58 countries.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Nuclear Issues: Australia's involvement in the nuclear fuel cycle continues to be the key campaign priority for FoE Australia in 1999. Foe is engaged at all levels of the debate about uranium and the nuclear cycle- from lobbying of the federal government over the proposed Billa Kalina waste facility (planned for South Australia) to working with local communities affected by proposed uranium mines.
Using its international contacts, Foe was recently able to expose plans by Pangea Resources to target Australia as the preferred option for an international high-level radioactive waste facility.
Forests: Foe is currently in the process of joining the Forest Stewardship Council, which will allow it to take a more active role in the field of sustainable timber production and certification.
Trade and Environment: Foe is actively involved in international planning on trade and environment issues; particularly addressing the role of investment banks in financing unsustainable infrastructure projects and suggesting viable socially and environmentally acceptable alternatives.
Aboriginal Reconciliation: A number of local Foe groups are currently negotiating with local traditional Aboriginal owners to achieve agreements on land use. This will hopefully lead to practical, on-the-ground advances being made which embrace reconciliation whereby local groups and local communities are able to agree on to work collectively on joint projects.
