Nature Conservation Council of NSW
The NCC is the main peak body in NSW representing over 100 environmental groups.
What we're doing to protect our environment:
Salinity Issues: NCC, in response to the CSIRO Salinity Audit report, facilitated a Community Salinity Summit held in Wagga in February 2000. Joint hosts were the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, the NSW Farmers Association and the NSW Council of Social Services. Over two hundred participants spent two days developing a Community Salinity Strategy.
Waste Management: NCC, with other environment groups is running a major campaign against the proposed Woodlawn Mega Waste Tip. If Woodlawn succeeds as a Waste Solution it will lead to increased rather than reduced waste.
Forests and energy issues: NCC, in conjunction with The Wilderness Society, the Colong Committee and the Total Environment Centre launched a card campaign against using timber from Native Forests as a “green” energy source. The campaign will expand over the next twelve months to target Green Power Consumers and to identify power retailers which source renewable power from Native Forests. This information will be used to ask consumers to boycott biomass from Native Forests.
Water: NCC launched its “Healthy Rivers, Healthy Communities” policy document this year to lead the conservation movement in seeking improved water (environmental) flows in rivers when the water industry is “privatised”.
