The Wilderness Society

From the Franklin River, to Shelburne Bay, from the Kimberley to the Great Australian Bight, from Kakadu to East Gippsland, The Wilderness Society has campaigned on many successful national battles to protect Australia's endangered wild lands, including our most precious rivers, forests, mountains and deserts.

What we're doing to protect our environment:

Nuclear Issues: The Society's campaign against Jabiluka revolves around working with shareholders in the relevant companies, ERA and North Ltd aimed at achieving recognition that on environmental, cultural and economic grounds Jabiluka should not proceed. In addition TWS has taken the argument to the international arena, to UNESCO, in an attempt to focus global attention on this destructive proposal and bring pressure to bear on the Federal Government.

Forests: TWS is involved in campaigns in WA, Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and QLD aimed at protecting Australia's remaining old-growth native forests from woodchipping and logging. Further TWS is strongly advocating the utilisation of existing plantations outside the native forest estate and the expansion of these plantations which would see an end to native forest logging altogether.

Land Conservation: TWS focuses on four great areas of wild lands with the aims being to establish a working presence in the Kimberley Region of WA. We working with traditional owners, pastoralists and various levels of government on Cape York designing and implementing a land-use regime designed to achieve ecological and cultural sustainability and designing a relationship and process which can be applied in similar exercises in the Kimberley and other remote areas. In the Lake Eyre region we are seeking to protect this area from oil and gas exploration and in Yumbarra in SA, we are seeking to the protection of the largest remaining area of mallee wilderness in Australia, from minerals development are the main foci.

Great Barrier Reef: The elimination of the devastating impacts of prawn trawling on the Great Barrier Reef by 2005. This damage to the sea bed impacts on all marine life that that rely on it for either food or shelter. Equally disturbing is the fact that for every kilo of prawns taken, between 9 and 12 kilos of marine life is thrown over the side dead. Our goal is to stop this carnage and replace it with an ecologically sustainable means of harvesting prawns.

Great Australian Bight: The protection of calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale and other marine fauna in the Great Australian Bight, where offshore oil exploration continues to threaten the calving grounds of the endangered Southern Right Whale is TWS other marine priority.
